関係詞 — that / which / who / where / when / whose

制限/非制限用法とコンマ運用を区別。

先行詞を正しく修飾し、冗長・曖昧さを避ける。

不可欠情報は無コンマ（制限用法）、追加情報はコンマ（非制限用法）。先行詞の種類（人/物/時/場所/理由）、数、文中の役割（主語/目的語/前置詞の目的語）を判定し、前置詞の位置（前置/後置）にも注意する。

以下のポイントを順番に押さえ、同じパターンの問題で解き方を再現できるようにしましょう。

句読法ルール

非制限用法はカンマで挟む（, which / , who）。thatは非制限不可。
前置詞+関係代名詞（pied-piping）：the client to whom we sent ... / the conditions under which ...
口語では前置詞後置（stranding）：the client who we sent the invoice to

選択のヒント

all/the only/序数/最上級の後は that が現れやすい（the only option that ...）。
先行詞が人→who/whom（目的格）/that、物→which/that。
when/where/why は in/on/at/during/for which で言い換え可能（名詞が「時/場所/理由」を表すか確認）。

ひっかけ注意

that は非制限用法（コンマ付き）不可。
前置詞の直後に that は置けない（✕ to that → ○ to which / whom）。
who と whom：前置詞の後や動詞の目的語は whom（試験では whom を推奨）。
what は先行詞を取らない（= the thing which）。✕ the reason what → ○ the reason why/that/for which。
the reason is because は冗長。→ the reason is that / We revised the policy because ...
where/when は「場所/時」を表す名詞にだけ用いる。抽象名詞には in which / at which などに置換。
非制限の , which は直前の名詞だけでなく前文全体を受けることがある（誤解を招かないよう配置）。

制限用法（無コンマ）

The policy that was updated last week will apply.

コツ: 不可欠情報を限定。TOEIC文体では物には that が無難。前置詞直後に that は不可。

非制限用法（コンマ）

コツ: 追加情報は , who/which, で。that は非制限用法不可。

コツ: 名詞が「時/場所/理由」を表す時のみ。必要に応じて in/at/on/during/for which に言い換え。
