Hệ thống sắc thái của các trợ động từ và mẫu câu If.
Có thể chọn trợ động từ và thì phù hợp với từng ngữ cảnh.
⚠️Bẫy thường gặp — các lỗi hay mất điểm
- KHÔNG nhầm mustn't (cấm) với don't have to (không cần).
- Phân biệt sắc thái của may (cho phép / khả năng) và can (cho phép / năng lực) — văn bản trang trọng thường dùng may.
- could dùng được cho "năng lực chung trong quá khứ", còn "thành tích một lần" thì dùng was able to / managed to tự nhiên hơn.
- Phân biệt nghĩa: should have + p.p. (đáng lẽ nên ~) vs must have + p.p. (chắc hẳn đã ~).
- Trong mệnh đề If thường KHÔNG dùng would (trừ các dạng đặc biệt như đề nghị lịch sự).
- Trong câu giả định quá khứ, dùng were cho mọi chủ ngữ kể cả I/he/she/it (If I were you).
- Sau các động từ đề nghị (suggest / insist / demand / require / ask...) trong mệnh đề that dùng động từ nguyên mẫu (giả định hiện tại). KHÔNG thêm s số ít.
- Cẩn thận với câu giả định hỗn hợp (If he had saved earlier, he would be debt-free now.).
